Restaurant Guan Xin, SK

>> Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Date: 28 October 2008
Venue: Guan Xin Restaurant, Seri Kembangan
Occasion: Dinner with Toby
Overall comment: I must say that this restaurant does serve pretty good Chinese-style dishes! It didn't look very appealing, but mmm...the dishes that we ordered were yummy!! The price is average & I've no complaints bout the service + ambience as well. It'll be a place that I would recommend :P

Specialties:- Steamed StripedSnakebead 家乡蒸生鱼片
- Homemade Fish Head Noodle 家乡鱼头米
- Hot Plate Mutton with Black Pepper 黑胡椒铁板煎羊扒
- Clay Pot Mutton 瓦煲羊腩
- Deep Fried ‘Sha Tian’ Chicken 炸沙田鸡
- Sotong with Salted Egg 咸蛋梳东
- Pig intestine with Belacan and Shrimp 虾米生肠
- Broccoli with 2 Types of Cooking 鸳鸯芥兰
- Clay Pot Ribs with Cream 湿奶油排骨

I think Toby & I just over-ate :S I felt SO full that any smell of food makes me nausea...lol...we FINISHED ALL the food that we ordered! *faints* The amount of food could feed 3 comfortably!!! Wergh...

Guan Xin Restaurant

Deep Fried Salted Egg Squid (RM13.00/small serving)
I thought this was fantabulous! It's not the crispy kind though...so if you like it dry & crispy, this may not be for you...what I like about this is that it's covered with 'powderish' salted egg & the squid's texture was just nice - not hard, not too soft :D Highly recommended! You don't even need to dip it into chilli sauce! Eat it just as it is! :P

Deep Fried Dried, Crispy, Thin Pork Slices in Kong Pou Style/"Kon Pou Fa Lam" (RM13.00/small serving)
Each slice of 'fatty pork' is thin & crispy...yums! It's complimented with the tangy taste of the 'kong pou' style sauce with onion & dried chilli, which gives it an extra 'kick'...*drools*

Stir Fried Kangkung with Garlic (RM6.00/small serving)

Miew Shin Vegetarian Restaurant, SK

Date: 28 October 2008
Venue: Taman Pinggiran Putra, Seri Kembangan
Occasion: Lunch with colleagues
Overall commment: The vegetarian food here tastes quite alright...it's not excellent, but for veggie food, it's quite nice. It's not too expensive too, as most vegetarian restaurants do over-charge for the sake of non-meat food...wergh *sweat* In terms of ambience, you seriously can't say much since it's just a coffeeshop. On the whole, it does look quite clean, so I've no complaints on this part of the review :P The only thing that's not very nice is the colour of the food...everything looks the same! *lol* It's either brown, or white, or orange, or yellow.... =_="

Miew Shin Restaurant

Vegetarian Tom Yam Bee Hoon/Vermicelli (RM4.50/bowl)
The portion of this bowl of noodles is indeed quite large for the price paid :S Perhaps too much! Hahaha....taste-wise, it's not too bad...not too spicy, not too sour, but well, not my kinda thing as I like something more sourish....heeeheee...the 'prawns' really looked like the real ones & so does everything else which are so-called meat! *lol*

Vegetarian Loh Mee (RM4.50/bowl)
This one wasn't satisfying... :( It doesn't look appetizing to begin with (maybe it's the colour), & it doesn't really taste like loh mee too! *bah* It's somewhat too heavy with pepper & sesame seed oil...and there wasn't any black vinegar to accompany the loh mee! Aisehman...it's not called loh mee without the vinegar! :( Not recommended...

Free soup
I thought it was 'ABC Soup' with maize, carrots, & potatoes, but no....beans! *faints* It taste somewhat bland, but ah well, it's free...can't complain much, right? *lol*

Mixed Rice (RM3.50 for 3 dishes)
The curry was quite nice :) I thought the vegetarian bbq pork was good too, except that it's a tad too sweet :P I'm a mushroom-lover, so however the mushrooms are cooked, it's still something that brings delight to my tummy!

Assortment of fried vegetarian food (RM2.00)
Quite cheap! The 'prawn fritters' were quite delicious :D The Nestum 'dunno wat' was also good! Hahaha...I seriously have no idea what's what...it's all the same to me...all are beancurd or some soya/flour product :P

Restaurant Mama's Kitchen, TTDI

Date: 27 October 2008
Venue: Restaurant Mama's Kitchen, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, KL
Occasion: Lunch with the band members
Overall comment: This place is surprisingly packed with patrons! The signature dishes are the claypot loh shu fun, garlic roast pork with wan tan noodles, and the creamy buttered squids :) Food's pretty delicious & ambiance is not too bad la...though a lil hot. Price wise, it's slightly higher than the usual, but for the quality of food that you get, it's worth paying a couple of ringgit more ;) Oh yeah, they do impose a 5% service charge on the total bill too :S

Creamy Buttered Squid (RM18.00/medium serving)
This dish is LOVELY! The taste of the 'creamy-butter' was a tad too sweet, but on the overall, it was really fragrant :) The squid was just nice in texture as well, & I reckon the curry leaves did the trick to enhance the entire dish! :D

Garlic Roast Pork Wan Tan Noodles (RM16.00/medium serving)
Wah...this pork noodles is divine....*lip smacking* It's indescribable man...I reckon what made the simple roast pork so good was just the garlic oil! The entire dish is actually VERY simple...just roast pork & noodles wei...

Claypot Loh Shu Fun (RM13.00/medium serving)
I felt that this wasn't excellent...it's missing in dried shrimp, thus making the dish a lil 'flat' in taste...aisehman...such a waste. Plus, I feel that they could afford one more egg to go with such a large claypot of loh shu fun....

Bella Italia, SS2

>> Monday, October 27, 2008

Date: 27 October 2008
Venue: Pizzeria Bella Italia, SS2
Occasion: Dinner with Aaron
Overall comment: I've always liked dining at this place. The ambience is cosy & the food is delicious (they have quite a wide variety too) :) The service here is also friendly & most importantly, the prices of food is comparatively cheap!

I reckon I had a lovely dinner. I forgot it's a Monday when I decided to dine at Bella Italia (there's the famous SS2 night market a.k.a. pasar malam) & oh gosh...the traffic jam was just ergh...I don't like traffic jams :( I told God... "God, I need a parking space...right in front of the restaurant ya, God..."

Aaron thought I was siao (mad)...so specific some more...and you know what, I seriously got a parking space in front of the restaurant!! *faints* Ok...it's not directly in front, but it's 2 spaces from the 'directly in front' parking space...siaoness! I was truly siao at that time...overjoyed :P *joy*

What makes Ruth happy? When it comes to having a meal, I guess getting a good parking space + having delicious food + cosy ambience restaurant + warm company of people + interesting conversations/fellowship -> a happy Ruthie :P

Lasagne with minced beef (around RM16.80/serving)
If you're a cheese-lover like us, you'll love this dish...at first sight, it didn't look all that 'wow', but when we dug in & tasted it for ourselves, mmm....lovely! The lasagne was rich with cheese & comes with a generous amount of minced beef & tomato puree + herbs. I liked the tangy-sourish taste of the tomato puree...compliments the cheese & the lasagne on the whole very well :P It's not too filling, nor is it too 'jelak' (it means sated to the point of fed up)...but maybe it's because we shared this dish, so it felt 'just nice' :)

Spaghetti with braised lamb, mushrooms, & olives in tomato cream sauce (around RM24.80/serving)
I can't recall the name for this dish...it's some Spagheti Ale-something Bella Italia...hahaha...but this spaghetti is really good! Even Aaron who isn't much of a food critique found this yummy...the braised lamb was tender & the tomato cream sauce was just perfect in taste & texture, giving the humble spagheti an added value & plus points! *yay*

Hai Peng Kopitiam, Kuantan

>> Sunday, October 26, 2008

Date: 26 October 2008
Venue: Hai Peng Kopitiam, Kuantan
Occasion: Lunch with Kuantan family
Overall comment: Me Likey! I feel that the ice-coffee here is one of the best that you can find in Kuantan! Kemaman Kopitiam may just offer the 2nd best, in my personal opinion :) The food here is also good! They have very yummy toaste & the Siam Laksa is oo-la-la! :D 'Nuff said...you've to try it out for yourself!

Chicken Curry with Toasted Buns set (RM4.50/set)
It looks like a very simple dish, but it's lip-smacking :P Savouring this humble dish just brings a sense of nostalgia to some good home-cooked chicken curry :) *aahhh....*

Siam/Thai-style Laksa (RM3.80/bowl)
Although a rather simple dish, I find this very delicious...I can eat 2 bowls! *lol*salivates...* The soup is just nice...not too spicy, not too oily, not too 'lemak' :) mmm....the only thing is that it could do with more fish & some pineapple slices! That will make it ichiban (number 1)!

Beef Noodles (RM4.50/bowl)
If you like something mild, this dish will suit you...it doesn't have an extremely strong beefy-smell, but it's just nice to give you the beef taste. The noodles came with a lot of beef slices & it is fragrantly accompanied by parsley! [if you're not a parsely fan, don't worry...just remove the greens from the top of the noodles & you'll get to enjoy the noodles as nice as it originally is!]

Mr Specky Restaurant, Kuantan

>> Saturday, October 25, 2008

I was in Kuantan for the weekend again (24-26 October 2008)...yes, yes, again...I was here last week for an official visitation to the youth group, but this week, it's like a 'weekend get-away' for myself, as well as to spend some time with my family & friends here.

Since I came here for uni (year 2004), I've somewhat fell in love with Kuantan. Not just because it has a beautiful beach (I can't resist good beaches!), but I guess it's the warmth of the people here that made me feel SO at home... Every trip that I make to Kuantan, I'll always go back to the same house, which I call my 'Kuantan home' & have the same room & the same kinda warmth & hospitality that I had when I first came here. It's rather amazing, really. The family treats me as their own & I do feel as if they're my family as well! Call it foster family in simple terms :)

I'm very glad that I managed to spend time with all the people whom I wanted to spend time with, & though it was quite a rushed & tiring trip, I felt satisfied :) *yay* I didn't really go on some eating-spree though, but whatever food that I managed to eat, I enjoyed it with great delight, with the company of the lovely people whom I dearly cherish & love :) I really look forward to be back there again!

Venue: Mr Specky Tomyam Seafood Restaurant, Kuantan
Occasion: Dinner with Kuantan family :)
Overall comment: This place is somehow famous for their crabs! My chi-chi (sister in Hokkien) will always head here for crabs at any time when she craves for it. The food here is good & I suppose it's value for money as well, else the family won't be coming back here each time when they crave for crabs & delicious food! The ambiance is like any Chinese restaurant, but it's quite clean, so no worries 'bout overall cleanliness :) My Specky offers a good variety of Chinese food, so you'll get yummy dishes, noodles, & rice of your choice ;)

Salt-Baked Crabs/"Yim Kuk Hai" in Cantonese

Claypot Creamy Buttered Crabs/"Nga Pou Lai Yao Hai"

Yummy!! I'm a black pepper fan!

Claypot Loh Shu Fun

Delay...Lag...but Stay Tuned!

>> Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Dear faithful readers of The Ruthless Eaters,

PerutBesi would like to apologize for the delay in updating the blog...Anne has been MIA since dunno when & I've been struggling to get posts up as well. I haven't really been eating out & haven't really had the time to visit new food places too!

Almost all my weekends are filled up with some activity. I've been rather busy on weekends & somewhat too lazy to go out alone on weekdays for food. It has been raining every other day here in Cyberjaya & all my housemates have gone back for their semester break -- I'm alone...sad man...hahaha...

I hope to share with all of you more food posts! Do stay tuned yeah...I'll hurry Anne for her posts on food in Kulim...she's been SO busy with work that I hardly get to sit her down to chat! *sigh* It makes me feel as if I'm SO free, but heck no....just that writing is one of my great passions :P

I'll bring you all more goodies in time to come....give me some time...if you can give me a hand in introducing good food places, do let me know! All comments & suggestions are warmly welcomed! :)

Official Visitation to Kuantan Wesley's MYF

Date: 17-19 October 2008
Venue: Kuantan Wesley/Kuantan
Occasion: Official visitation to the youth group in Kuantan Wesley under TRAC MYF
Note: I'll upload the pics soon once I get it from CS, who's my faithful Personal Assistant!

The main purpose of going to Kuantan last weekend was to visit the youth group in Kuantan Wesley. I'm a committee member of the national-level Trinity Annual Conference (English-speaking) Methodist Youth Fellowship (TRAC MYF) body. This committee oversees the Methodist youth groups in Malaysia - find out how they're doing, assist them in overcoming the struggles they go through....etc. One of the 'tasks' that we carry out as a committee is to go around Malaysia, visiting the youth groups. We certainly couldn't finish visiting all of them, there are at least 34 Methodist youth groups all over Malaysia! All 5 of us committee members are stretched out in some way or another. We have other commitments, & to go around Malaysia while at the same time we're students/working adult (I'm the only working one... =.=") isn't something easy.

Anyways, the visit to Kuantan was a very refreshing one. Only 3 of us committee members could make it for this visitation. LC is in Penang & is heading some blood donation campaign for the hospital that he's attached to, while ST has some conference by her uni to attend. It's JO's & CS's first time in Kuantan, & my, they are sure excited :)

I brought them to the beach where CS could take all the photos that he wants & we had cendol, nasi dagang, & ikan bakar as well. There wasn't enough time to try out other food stuff before & after our 'duty'! Haha...there'll be more opportunities in the future :)

Overall, we had a great time there with the youths, catching up with friends, & for me - spending some time with my families there as well.

*****
Some photos that I took with my own camera:

Date: 17 October 2008, Friday
Venue: Crocodile Rock, Lorong Kubang Buaya, Kuantan (along the way to Teluk Cempedak beach)
Occasion: Dinner with AP
Halal: Yes
Overall comment: It's a very nice place to dine :) Ambiance is very warm, cosy & homey (no, it's not the humid warm...haha). Prices of food there is quite reasonable too :) The taste of food there is also quite nice, depending on what you order. The pizza there is quite nice :)

Guava Juice

Sunset Delight Pizza
Thin crust topped with chunky assortment :P Me likey...it could do with more cheese! I like the taste of the sauce...yums! Oh ya...AP thought it's called Sunset Special, that's why we ordered it...but I feel that it's called Sunset Delight! *lol* If u happen to try this place out & find out what it's called, let me know!

Croco
Delicious spaghetti with chicken in tomato cream sauce. It's a very simple pasta, but yummy :)

*****
Date: 18 October 2008, Saturday
Venue: 'a corner coffeeshop opposite Kuantan Specialist Centre in Kuantan Garden/Seri Kuantan' - there's only ONE coffeeshop there...
Occasion: Breakfast with uncle Francis & Phoebe
Overall comment: The curry laksa there was quite nice, especially the yong tau foo pieces! I liked it...but the curry was a bit diluted :( This isn't the best place for curry laksa...the one along Jalan Teluk Sisek, on the way to Teluk Cempedak, same row as Zam Zam mamak, is much better, but by the time we went there, it was sold out! *wow*

Sun & Surf Cafe, Sunway

Date: 30 August 2008
Venue: Sun & surf Cafe, Sunway Lagoon Hotel & Spa
Meal: Buffet Dinner (Eastern-- I recall they told me it was International buffet, but I kena tipu liao) I went with my sister & had some sister-bonding time with her...heehee...
Purpose of dining: Complimentary buffet lunch/dinner for birthday by StopOvers (it's Jen's voucher, but she can't make it, so she gave it to me & told me to enjoy it! Thank u, Jen!!!)
Condition: At least 1 other dining-in person (maximum of 20 persons)

Japanese selection...
The sushi is 'ok', but the salmon sashimi isn't very fresh...so it didn't taste very nice :S

Oysters & mussels
The mussels were alright, but the oysters were a lil stale...

Cooked dishes
The only dish that we felt was delicious was the deep fried squid rings with golden yolk (front)...

Dessert
The dessert variety was much better than their main course variety...although not excellent :P The chocolate-filled tart was nice :)

BBQ-ed Variety
It's our first time having lamb sausages & my sister & I didn't really like it...it's a lil strong in the 'lamb' smell, which wasn't exactly pleasant (though I do love lamb!)...the potato was not too bad...I guess we were a little too full, so we didn't bother taking much of the BBQ-ed variety :P

More dessert
The pistachio pudding in that small cup tasted rather strange...hahaha...the rest of the dessert were more plesing to the taste bud...hahaha...

Ice Cream
Although we were pretty full, there's no meaning if we miss out the ice cream! So for the fun of it, we just took some...gluttons! *lol*

More seafood??
My sister decided to end our dinner with more mussels & oysters...sigh...I think I've had enough of these to last me for the year! *faints*

Complimentary birthday cake
This is a complimentary cake from Sunway Hotel since I went with the 'birthday coupon', which was actually Jen's :P Thanks so much for the lovely cake!!

Chocolate Mud Cake
I think this is the BEST thing in the entire buffet dinner...the cake's really nice! Rich in chocolate & very moist :P Yums!

It's rare that we can find good char kuey teow for dinner! *sigh* Well, at least for this one, the taste is good & the uncle will fry the noodles plate by plate! This is SO very important...

Dinner at Agefuku

>> Saturday, October 11, 2008

Date: 10 October 2008
Venue: Agefuku Japanese Restaurant, USJ10 Taipan
Occasion: Dinner with 2 high school friends
Overall comment: We ate at the fast food section (they have a fine dining section, which offers more sushi-like kinda food. The ambiance of the place we were at was relatively nice. The food was a tad bland though the portion was actually quite good for the price paid. The service there was good too :) The best part is that there isn't any tax imposed on the total bill! Woohoo!!

I've wanted to drop by Agefuku since a long time ago, but never really had the chance to do so. This place offers a decent variety of 'fast food' & fine dining items as well. They have promotions every now & then, sometimes, it's really worth the money spent!

Agefuku Japanese Restaurant

The counter

Tori Katsu Don (RM8.00/bowl)
This dish is actually fried chicken fillet wrapped in fried egg, & accompanied by seaweed strips, served with rice. The serving is quite large! Believe it or not, I couldn't finish the entire bowl...so you can just imagine how much rice & how generous the portion of chicken they gave!

Hot Green Tea (RM3.00...comes together as an Add-On with a bowl of miso soup)
I find the 'cup' rather interesting...it felt as if I was drinking green tea from a vase!! *lol*

Bibimbap set (RM15.00/set)
The set comes with the bibimbap (actually a Korean mixed-rice dish in a hot stone bowl) a cup of cold green tea, a bowl of miso soup, and 1 serving of fruits.

Japanese Curry Pork Chop Rice (around RM10.00/plate...I'm not too sure)
The curry is very different from the ones we have at Chinese, Malay, or Indian restaurants. It has some slightly spicy feel, but it taste different somehow...generous helping as well.

WS & I
I've been friends with WS since primary school & we've certainly come a LONG way as friends! ;)

ST & WS
Friends since lower secondary school days...I thought they kinda looked alike in this photo! *lol*

ST & I
We've been classmates since Form 2!

It was indeed a great time of catching up. I do look forward to the next time we meet...with YL along!!
