Ah Lye Curry Fish Head, Subang Jaya

>> Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Hello dear readers!

Sorry for slacking in updating of this blog...been quite caught up with the load of work at office that by the time I get back, I just don't want to do anything constructive! I can't wait to have my end-year break...hohoho...counting down the days! :D

**********

Venue: Ah Lye Curry Fish Head, SS19 Subang Jaya
Occasion: Dinner with friends
Overall comment: The fish head/meat curry is pretty good :) According to JC, it's the best that he has ever tasted in Klang Valley. I kinda enjoyed the fried squid too, but JC's wife said that that night's fried squid wasn't as good as before...hopefully it's a one-off dip in quality only...
Halal: No

I've heard much about this curry fish head restaurant. Even some friends from as far as Sitiawan knows about Ah Lye & recommends this restaurant for some good dose of curry fish head. News of good food sure travels a LONG way! :) Ah Lye was even featured in The Star newspaper 3 years back! (that's when I sorta just started my gastronomic adventures)

Ah Lye is tucked in the quiet residential area of SS19 Subang Jaya. The restaurant is packed during peak hours, & especially during the weekends. When it comes to fish head curry, most fish head curry fans would just know their way to this place :)

JC ordered the fish meat curry instead as he finds the fish head a little too troublesome to eat (with all the bones). The curry was thick, fragrant, & not-too-spicy for the PerutBesi *lip-smacking!* I can just have the fish head curry with rice alone! You'll find generous amount of fish head/meat pieces, accompanied by okras/lady's fingers, aubergines/brinjals, & bean curd puffs/"taufu pok"...oh, lovely :)

Sizzling Hot Claypot Curry Fish Head/Meat

Deep-Fried Squid
The presentation, especially the colour of the fried squid wasn't really appealing. I didn't have much faith in the squid 'til I took a bite *crunch!* Ah! It was good!! I loved it & could finish up at least half the plate (too much will give me a sore throat) by myself.

Salted-Baked Chicken
This chicken was of no comparison to the one I bought from Ipoh...it wasn't fragrant enough & the flavour of salted-baked chicken was just absent. Quite disappointing :( JC said it used to be quite good, but I guess some things just isn't the same today as it was yesterday...

Stir-fried Kailan with Garlic
It's a simple stir-fried kailan, so I don't really have much complaints.

This meal was a treat from JC, so I don't know how much the meal costs. But I reckon it isn't too expensive. If it is unreasonably priced, no one would bother weaving through the housing area just to satisfy their cravings for fish head curry! :D

Let me know what you think about this curry fish head restaurant. If you've better recommendations, drop me a note! :) Stay tuned with PerutBesi! ;)

Family Day Trip to Ipoh - Sungkai (Part 2)

>> Tuesday, September 21, 2010

This is one relaxing & fun place for family outings
Entrance is cheap too...RM10.00/adult - you can stay there the whole day & just play at the mini cold water park or dip yourself into the hot spring pools

Bubbling natural hot springs

My dad was standing at the 40+ degrees Celsius pool area
It was too hot for my liking, but he loved it...

Mum & sis dipping in the 30+ degrees Celsius pool...just like our warm water shower :)

After several hours of dipping in pools, it was time to bid goodbye to Sungkai...

The sunset welcomed us back to our home :)

We ended the family day-trip with a simple dinner at Restoran Fatt Kie, Bandar Pinggiran Subang. This place offers delicious Chinese food at an affordable price :)

"Wu Tao Kao Yoke"/Yam with Pork (RM18.00/large)
Tender pieces of pork belly with slices of yam in between the pieces of pork - steamed to perfection :) Ah...lovely! Fat that melts in your mouth are the best!

"Lai Yau Yue"/Dried Buttered Fish (RM15.00/large)
Noticed that we ordered everything large...? We were ravenously hungry after all the fun!! :D This dish wasn't very tasty, but good enough...the egg was fragrant, but somehow the fish wasn't satisfying...

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves with "Fu Yi"/Preserved Beancurd (RM10.00/large)
This was a huge plate of veggie for 4 persons...hahaha...but it was good! Tender, flavourful & nicely stir-fried :)

We were all very tired, but enjoyed the short trip up to Ipoh :)

When was the last time you spent quality time with your family?

Malaysians have somewhat forgotten about spending quality time with their family members. I know for sure that my dear parents were bubbling with joy inside to be able to spend time with their grown-up children :) It's a priceless reward.

Family Day Trip to Ipoh - Sungkai (Part 1)

One of the best things is to drive along the highway with the sun greeting you "Good morning"

Up north - Ipoh, here we come!

The thick fog/midst that morning was such a mysterious view...

Our first stop was at the Foh San Dim Sum Restaurant

Where you'll find piping hot "char siew pau", with char siew oozing out of the pau...

This was recommended by my friend, Fungi...the "Nam Yue Pau"

That comes with an EXTRA FATTENING slice of pork belly!!
it's terribly high in cholesterol, but oh, so delicious!

We thought Foh San's dim sum are awesome, but they're moderately good only....

Thank goodness the prawns are still quite fresh

This dish is my sister's favourite, but it was not terrific here at Foh San....

Nevertheless, it's still worth eating for the price you pay

Foh San's steamed fishballs are commendable; smooth & slightly chewy (not entirely soft & "floury")

The steamed fishballs are better than the fried ones somehow...but I guess it's individual preference

You don't need to bother ordering their "kao zhi" as this dumpling's skin is so thick & unappetizing

My dad wasn't very satisfied, so he ordered a "loh mai kai" in hopes to satisfy his cravings,
but it didn't do much of a trick...he said you can find better ones in PJ, minus the waiting for a table & to be served

At the end of the meal, it's always good to be thankful & to keep the cheer :)

Even when you didn't quite like the food, the packed surroundings, & the noise...

Overall

After filling the stomach, it was time to shop for "souvenirs" around the Foh San square...

The "aunty" was a natural when it comes to a wok filled with coarse salt for the salted baked chicken...

The "food blogger" is as usual excited over every little finding that concerns food...

While the youth who loves camwhoring gives endless animated expressions!

One of the best salted baked chickens can be found here...RM17.00/bird
We ended up buying 7 chickens for our family & friends...hahaha...

Queue up for the famous "kaya puffs" from Sin Eng Heong... for RM0.70/piece

You'll find more than just "kaya puffs" - there are even cute shaped biscuits for kids :)

Each tray gets snapped up so quickly...at times, 1 customer takes the whole tray or more!!

After standing in line for half an hour, I got my "kaya puffs"!! 3 boxes of it :D

Delicious puffs for tea-time :) (best eaten warm)
