Delicious Malacca-Nyonya Food at Makko

>> Sunday, January 30, 2011

Venue: Restoran Nyonya Makko, Malacca Raya area
Overall comment: One of the best authentic nyonya food places in Malacca. You have to make prior reservations to avoid disappointment! This restaurant is often packed with people!
Halal: No

I was in Malacca several weeks ago with the Jeremiah School students. We were invited to a sumptuous dinner by some Malacca Wesley church members, together with some of the youths at this popular Nyonya food restaurant. This restaurant is located  in Melaka Raya area, walking distance from Dataran Pahlawan.

As mentioned earlier, the restaurant is often packed with people, locals & tourists as well. I reckon it's more popular with the locals than the tourists. You have to make your reservations just in case they're fully booked! It's THAT good...

The restaurant isn't very large. It has simple "traditional" decorations adorning the walls, & there's nothing fanciful to shout about...the downside about this restaurant is that the whole restaurant smells of food, so you'll end up walking out of the restaurant smelling like the restaurant itself! *eeuuw*

We were introduced to some of the restaurant's signature dishes :) So, here's what we had that night!

Fried Beancurd with Spicy Peanut Sauce
This dish was slightly spicy, but the peanuts gave the bland beancurd some extra fragrance & texture :)

Pongteh Chicken
One of the most famous & common Nyonya dishes is this Pongteh Chicken. It has a lot of shallots & soya bean paste ("tau si" in Cantonese) as the base of the dish. The chicken & potatoes are braised to perfection, until the aroma of the ingredients blend together with the humble chicken & potato pieces :) Here's a Pongteh Chicken recipe I got from some website: Chicken Pongteh Recipe.

Spicy Sambal Shrimps
If you're a fan of shrimps/prawns in some spicy & slightly sweet sauce, you'll certainly love this dish!

Omelette with Cincalok & Vegetables
I couldn't really taste the cincalok (fermented small shrimps/krill) in this omelette! :( If Danny didn't mention that there's cincalok in this omelette, I wouldn't even know! Perhaps the restaurant needs to put more cincalok into this egg dish?

Lady's Fingers with Spicy Onion Sambal
This is a very simple vegetable dish. I reckon all they did was to blanch the lady's fingers in boiling water & pour the onion sambal over the veg...the lady's fingers were nicely cooked (not under-cooked!), so it was really enjoyable.

Stir-Fried Sweet Potato Leaves with Dried Shrimp Sambal
I found this slightly spicy, but thank goodness the vegetables weren't old :)

If you're up to some authentic Nyonya food in Malacca, do pop by this place! I doubt you'll be disappointed, but I can't guarantee anything though :P

Yummy Malacca Cendol

Jeremiah School 2011 is currently on pause-mode for the CNY break. But as for yours truly, I've somewhat completed my term at the school (starting work on the 7th of Feb already)...the rest of the students & mentors will be resuming school on the 9th of Feb 'til the end of February. I will only be joining them on the weekends when they go church-visiting :)

I'm truly blessed to be part of the team for this year's Jeremiah School. Truly, all glory be to God :) I will really miss the youths & the lovely view at Golden Sands Baptist Assembly, Port Dickson!

Beautiful sunset at the beach

And awesome sun rays bursting through the clouds! Glorious!!

Without a doubt, there were opportunities for yummy food along the way as well!! :D

**********
Venue: Jetta Groves, Malacca Raya area
Overall comment: Thumbs up for the cendol! Satisfied :D

One of the Malacca Wesley young adults recommended Jeta Groves' cendol as one of the better ones around town. As we were craving for some good cendol with fragrant gula Melaka, we just took our chances to try this place out.

On the outside, this place certainly didn't look very impressive. However, for such a small shop, it actually offers quite a variety of food! They're quite well known for their cendol, mee siam, rojak, nasi lemak, & the nyonya kuih.

The lovely cendol (RM2.50 for the usual/"biasa" bowl of cendol)
Certainly no regrets on tasting this cendol :) I enjoyed the thick & fragrant gula Melaka on the ice shavings, accompanied by the "fat" green cendol, which were not too soft! *drools* I just didn't fancy the overload of coconut milk on my cendol...hahaha...SO fattening :P Imagine my sugar-level + cholesterol level all shooting up! Woohoo!! I want another bowl! *grins*

Good Food Galore

>> Saturday, January 15, 2011

I'm so blessed! For the whole month of January 2011, I had the opportunity to be part of the Jeremiah School 2011; living as a community, eating together, & doing activities together. Our campsite is at the Golden Sands Baptist Assembly, & as the PerutBesi, I'm just amazed at how camp food can be so good! I seriously never had such good camp food...here's to share with all of you what are some of the things we had during Jeremiah School :)

Home-cooked food by Seremban Wesley church members

The most surprising meal at Golden Sands Baptist Assembly
I would never expect such a good meal at camp! Western food! :D

Don't you wish that other campsites offer such good food? Hahaha...I feel truly blessed....have you been counting your blessings? :)

Yummy Seremban Beef Noodles

>> Friday, January 14, 2011

Venue: Seremban Market
Occasion: Lunch
Overall comment: Still as good, but perhaps just a 'lil more expensive than several years before ;P

Last weekend was Jeremiah School's visitation to Seremban Wesley & Taman Ujong Methodist Church. As we were already in Seremban, I just could not miss eating the famous Seremban beef noodles. I satisfied my cravings for beef noodles at the market's stall #748. Apparently, there are many other good beef noodles around, but I have yet to try them out! Gives me more reason to be back in Seremban another time for more beef noodles....teeheehee...

Yummy Beef Noodles (price unsure)
Delicious beef noodles, Seremban-style, in thick, gooey sauce, tossed with fragrant peanuts, sesame seed, & slices of salted/preserved vegetables. The noodles commonly used in Seremban is the "lai fun" (usually seen in assam laksa).

Delectable Beef Balls
It's very much like pork balls, but it's beef. I enjoyed this very much. I love the fragrance of the beef-stock soup although it was a tad salty.

This weekend, Jeremiah School will be heading to Malacca! I'm looking forward to a fruitful trip as well as one with much yummy food :D

Stay tuned with PerutBesi!

Restaurant Piccadilly, Petaling Jaya

>> Saturday, January 8, 2011

Venue: Restaurant Piccadilly, Section 14
Occasion: Dinner with parents
Overall comment: Decent food at affordable prices. I still am amazed at their variety!
Halal: Yes (food only, as it's like a mamak, but beer is sold)

Good + cheap food always draw a crowd! I didn't know of Piccadilly's existence 'til late last year. This place has been around for a very long time, I'm sure, but the PerutBesi has been exploring places out of Petaling Jaya/Selangor that she over-looked her own "territory"!

Located below a block of condominiums called Millennium Square, this restaurant offers an extensive variety of food: local Malaysian, Indian, Thai, Italian, Chinese, & Malay. I was totally amazed...there are at least 200 different types of food at this restaurant! There is also a list of roughly 30 types of drinks & desserts (I felt that the desserts weren't very appealing - the last time I tried some, they looked nice, but didn't taste very nice)

This time around, I took both my parents there for dinner. They were quite pleased with the food at Piccadilly's, which was a relieve to me, since my dad can be quite picky with food (he's a typical Chinese man).

Lemon Chicken with Steamed Rice (RM6.90/serving)
This was the best among the 3 dishes that we ordered to share. The deep-fried chicken wasn't dry & the skin was deliciously crispy! :D The lemon sauce wasn't too sour nor too sweet as well - just the way we liked it. For RM7, it was a meal worth having.

Mee Rebus (RM5.40/serving)
According to my dad, so far, no other mee rebus is better than the one at the Giant Hypermall in Kelana Jaya's food court. This one is acceptable, but it certainly wasn't to his expectation.

Fish Head Meehoon (RM5.90/serving)
My mum's a big fan of fish head meehoon & this wasn't very much like how fish head meehoon is supposed to be like. The soup is quite fragrant, but it's not alike the authentic fish head meehoon, where evaporated milk & Chinese cooking wine are used. For as long as I have known how this noodles is served, I have never seen carrots & spring onions in it, but this one is surely unique...hahaha...Oh, I miss good fish head meehoon!!

On the overall, this place has decent food. You just have to know what to order & what not to bother ordering. I believe their Western, Indian, & local ranges are pretty good for the price you pay. I've tried their naan & thought that it wasn't too bad :) Do try it out when you're around the area ;) It's opened throughout the day, from breakfast through supper!

Sneak Preview into Jeremiah School 2011 - My Adventure

>> Friday, January 7, 2011

I'm back for a 1-day break from Jeremiah School (JS)! It's not my official off-day, but I requested to leave the school to attend my job interview back in PJ. The school is conducted at Golden Sands Baptist Assembly Centre at Teluk Kemang, Port Dickson, a relatively comfortable place to live for the duration of the school i.e. 6 weeks.

There are 20 students this year & it's like an adventure for me to be there as one of their mentors. Even though it's just week 1 of school, I felt that I have learned much & I'm actually quite excited for the weeks to come (what more the students themselves)! The students attend classes, worship, & have team building times together, as well as live as a community for 6 weeks of their lives :)

Here's a sneak preview to Jeremiah School 2011:

I'll be back at JS tomorrow, where they'll be visiting Beautiful Gates, Seremban & 2 Methodist churches in Seremban as well (Seremban Wesley & Taman Ujong Methodist Church)! I hope to get some food photos up in my next post!!

Stay tuned with PerutBesi & have a great January 2011!

Of Unpacking & Packing

>> Tuesday, January 4, 2011

I pretty much packed part of my wardrobe the end of last year for a week away in Kuantan & for the Youth Quake 2010 camp in Peacehaven, Genting Highlands. Just as my load of clothes were nicely washed, I've to pack up once again for my next "adventure" - Jeremiah School 2011.

It's been 7 years since my time at Jeremiah School in 2004. Back then, I was a participant, but this time around, I'll be attending JS as a mentor. Even so, I'm not 100% sure if I can stay through the entire duration of the program. I'm still waiting for a job offer after my interview this evening, so should I get the job, I may have to leave the program.

There are just so many things on my mind now & all I can do is just to clear the clutter in my mind, sit down, wait, & listen to God's direction. I really pray that I won't make a bad move that I will regret. The adventure is out there! Oh, when I'm at the crossroads of life now, which way should I take next?

I may not get to do constant food blogging, but when I have my off-days (if I were to stay on at JS), I'll do my best to keep this site updated with my adventure!

In search of THE adventure,

Farewell 2010, Welcome 2011!

>> Sunday, January 2, 2011

I'm back from the Youth Quake 2010 camp!! Fuh! It was a blast & I'm dead tired!

The year 2010 surely ended well :) Year 2011 began on a great tone as well, assuring me that God's in control of every single step of my life.

Here are some snapshots of what's been happening to me during my "absence" from this blog. I'll indeed be blogging more food stuff this year! *woots*

Winter Solstice Festival a.k.a. "Dong" 2010
The "grandest" festival for the Cantonese people is the Winter Solstice Festival, which falls on the 22nd of December each year (at least for my family). This year, as per every year, we had a family gathering with more than 10 different dishes to savour! Oh, the joy of indulging into home-cooked food is bliss!

(clockwise, L>R): Roast duck, Pan-Fried Prawns, Vegetable Curry, & Stir-Fried Broccoli with Peppers & Mushrooms

(clockwise, L>R): Baked dry curry potatoes with onions, Stir-Fried "Nga Ku", Hakka-style braised pork with black fungus, Stir-Fried Cucumbers with Liver in Vinegar

(clockwise, L>R): Baked chicken breast with garlic, ginger, & onions, Braised Mushrooms with Abalone, Tong Yuen, & a table filled with food!

Christmas 2010 in Kuantan
Christmas is best spent with family & friends. This year, my family decided to celebrate Christmas out of PJ for a change. We ended up in Kuantan for 3d2n, & it was truly an enjoyable weekend get-away for us! There's nothing much to do in Kuantan apart from walking on the beach, relaxing, & eating :P The best part for my family was perhaps the meeting up with my Kuantan families for meals & catch-up!

Youth Quake 2010 @ Peacehaven, Genting Highlands
Youth Quake is a national-level camp organized by the Board of Youth Work (BOYW) & the Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC). The camp is opened to mostly English-speaking Methodist churches, & also to all Christians & non-Christians alike. This year's theme was "Shockwave", & it was indeed a blast of a camp! God is good all the time!!

New Year's Eve Celebration 2010
A simple gathering of friends is all I need...ah, lovely food & catch-up with good company. The food combination felt like breakfast, but who cares? As long as it's good food shared with good friends, it's more than enough to ask! ;)

New Year's Eve "Dinner"

 Anyone for blue cheese? :P

Farewell 2010, Welcome 2011!

I'm looking forward to a new year filled with more excitement & blessings in abundance :) May your year 2011 be a wonderful year from its beginning to the end of the year! God bless!

Always,
