Nostalgia - A&W Waffle & Root Beer Float

>> Friday, September 28, 2012

What else would come to your mind when the word "A&W" is mentioned? No other than these, right?

..
..

Mug of Chilled Root Beer Float (BEST!)

A&W Waffles with the Classic Unsalted Butter & Honey!

Classic Coney Dog
Basic hotdog topped with minced meat in A&W's special sauce & chopped yellow onions

Ultimate nostalgia! I haven't been to A&W for probably more than 10 years...or maybe more than 15 years??! Ah, a DECADE!

Landmark for PJ since goodness knows when!

The 1st thing that comes to mind when I stepped into A&W was to order a mug of chilled root beer float. Then the other thing that I HAD to have was the A&W waffles with butter & honey/syrup. Nothing else. I don't fancy their burgers & neither did I order their classic coney dog (WS did, that's why I could take a photo of it!).

My root beer float (RM4.80+/regular mug)
Must have the 2 scoops of vanilla ice-cream in the root beer! Creamy, fragrant, & oh-so-yummy!

Classic waffle - ah, nostalgic (RM5.90+/waffle with butter+honey)
But somehow the waffles aren't as satisfying...thankfully I didn't order anything else as I was struggling to finish a whole waffle by myself. It's just eating a large, thick, piece of slightly crispy sweetened flour! Hahahaha...horrible way to describe it, but by the time I was halfway through, it did felt like that...I was feeling "jelak" already :P

I wish the prices of food here are slightly cheaper. For just a waffle with butter & honey + a regular mug of root beer float, I spent RM11.35 (inclusive of 6% government tax). It's quite a costly "dinner" considering I didn't have anything much! WS & GK spent even more since they took the set meals.

The not-so-classic waffle...haha...with ice-cream (RM7.20+/waffle with ice-cream)
Looks awesome, but so filling!

Coney Dog Combo (RM11.55+/set)
The combo comes with a large root beer & a regular box of curly fries. Unfortunately, it seems like the standard of the coney dog has dropped :( The buns were dry & "chewy", while the hotdog/sausage was also quite "stiff"/hard. The sauce was still alright, but the overall experience was kinda disappointing :( Not to mention it's very pricey too!

If not for the totally awesome time of sharing & laughter, I wouldn't have enjoyed the dining experience at A&W tonight :) Three of us practically sat there talking & laughing for 3 hours straight...oh goodness, such joy!! :D Great friends like these are SO hard to come by & as much as I cherish the nostalgia of A&W, I cherish such awesome times spent with friends even more ;)

Chilli Rush, Jaya One, PJ

>> Thursday, September 27, 2012

Overall comment: The chicken wings are tasty & that's what it's well-known for: chilli chicken wings. The rest of the food are pretty decent, except for the burger. Somehow my burger was dry/over-cooked. Sigh. I always have issues with beef burgers at Jaya One area :(
Halal: Yes

I'm sure many people have heard of this place, Chilli Rush, & many would have tried it at least once. This place is at least a year old, if I'm not mistaken, & they're well-known for their chilli chicken wings! It's opened & managed by my friend's student's parents, where the student's mum started off with just baking good cakes. Then, they ventured into this business to offer some good chilli chicken wings & some pretty good cakes as well. This place also offers pretty decent Asian & Western dishes to accompany your yummy chilli chicken wings ;)

Same row as Wendy's, pretty much opposite The Bee's.

How hot & spicy can you take?
If you're a spicy-food lover, you'll probably find something that will satisfy your palette here.

Levels of spiciness
Level 1 - Mildly Merry
Level 2 - A Little Kick
Level 3 - Getting There
Level 4 - Testing Times
Level 5 - Hot
Level 6 - Habba Habbanero
Level 7 - Very Spicy
Level 8 - Close to Insanity
Level 9 - Ultimate Insanity
Level 10 - Chilli Rush

Chilli Rush Level 5 (around RM16.80/serving of 3 pairs of wings)
There are up to 10 levels of spiciness. We opted for Level 5 as this level is supposed to be spicy, yet not overly spicy 'til your tongue gets numb. I thought it's just nice for me & I may be able to go up to CR6 only...haha...the price also differs as you go up the spicy-scale!

Chilli-coated crispy wings
Sweet, savoury, spicy, & slightly tangy kinda taste...very appetizing :)

Satay Wings
Not really spicy wings - it has bits of peanuts just like the satay sauce, except that it's more spicy than the usual satay sauce :P Quite fragrant.

Pan-Fried Dory in Cheesy Spinach Pasta (RM23.90/serving)
Nicely pan-fried dory fillet that accompanied a pretty rich & cheesy spinach-cream pasta. I thought it would be quite "jelak" since it's so creamy, but LY said she enjoyed every bit of it. I tried the sauce only & felt that it's actually not too bad...at least in a small portion :P LY's serving of this pasta is flooded with cream, but CC's looked quite dry...hmm...consistency differs, which is questionable :S In addition, I feel that the price is slightly high as well for a pasta dish. I could easily get a good plate of pasta at Vary Pasta for almost RM10.00 less!

Grilled Stuffed Dory with "Wild" Rice (RM21.90/serving)
Grilled Dory stuffed with mushrooms in a piquant pineapple sauce on a bed of wild red rice & spinach.
Serving is moderately generous for the price paid. As I didn't taste this dish, I reckon that it tasted alright since JX didn't complain. Haha.

Pandan Wrapped Chicken with "Wild" Rice (RM17.90/serving)
Chilli Rush's Thai Speciality! Served with rich, wild rice and sweet aubergines in a thick pepper gravy.
Looks good! I may try this if I pop-by again.

Chilli Cheese Burger (RM22.90/serving)
Our in house juicy beef patty comes complete with pickles, onion relish, fresh garden salads, melted cheese, topped with our very own signature chilli sauce.
#1. Price is indeed slightly steep for the portion served. I could actually get a better burger + fries at myBurgerLab for around this price (or maybe slightly more, but it sure tastes WAY better than this one)! #2. It is NOT a juicy beef patty!! :( I should have requested for them to change my burger, but I didn't read the menu & remember it properly. Bummer.

Moderately thick patty

Dry & crumbly patty :'( even with the "signature chilli sauce"
The sauce wasn't enough to "moisten" the patty...BAH.

In-House Red Velvet (RM11.50/slice - Home-Baked by the owner)
The cake is slightly lighter than the usual red velvets that I've tried, which are denser & more moist. I felt this one is more "crumbly", but not to say that it's dry+crumbly...it's "lighter". You'll also find the presence of coconut shavings in the cake, which is quite unique (but it'll be a horror for those who loathe coconut shavings). The cream cheese is also not very thick & rich, which some may fancy having something not too heavy as dessert after a full meal. If you're into rich, creamy, moist, densed red velvet, this may not be your pick. However, the red colour is from beetroot juice, which is a great natural colouring for the red velvet :) LY loves the red velvet here as she finds it just nice.
I haven't come across a red velvet that I truly adore & fancy that isn't too sweet, yet rich enough to provide that ultimate satisfaction to every bite ;)

If I were to dine at Chilli Rush again, the chilli chicken wings will certainly be part of the order. As for the main course, I may try their pasta or their rice dishes. I doubt I'll give the burger another chance for redemption. Haha.

Kim Poh Claypot Chicken Rice

>> Wednesday, September 26, 2012

Overall comment: Pretty tasty claypot chicken rice, but I personally feel that it lacks fragrance & "umph". I'll elaborate in my post below. The veggie is almost a no-no as it was kinda old & doesn't look very fresh.
Halal: No

It's one of those random work days where we drove slightly further for lunch. Good food is usually an excellent cure for Monday blues ;) We were privileged to have JS introducing this place in Segambut to us. She said it's a good place for claypot chicken rice, so we had to try it out to see if what she said is indeed true! Hahaha...

This coffeeshop has been around for quite some time (I found out from their website that they're around since 1979!! Yes, they HAVE a website!) & it sells only charcoal-cooked claypot chicken rice - nothing else. In the earlier days, this business was managed by the present chef's father. Now, the son took over & I reckon some things have "changed".

"Chef" at work
It's a classic charcoal-cooked claypot rice! :D

The coffeeshop
Most of their patrons are working adults from surrounding areas.

Ingredients for the claypot chicken rice
The 1st thing that I noticed was that the chicken pieces weren't marinated with dark soya sauce, which I felt was an essential part of claypot chicken rice. The 2nd thing that I realized was that the chicken pieces also didn't have/really lacks 2 ingredients in the marinade i.e. sesame seed oil & Chinese cooking wine ("Fa Thiu Xiu Heng Zhao"). That's why I personally feel that the claypot chicken rice lacks that fragrance & "umph".

My BEST shot for this meal!!
I really love this shot...makes my little Lumix feel like a DSLR :P These chilli aren't as spicy as the "cili padi", but they're certainly more fragrant & goes well with the claypot chicken rice.

Ice Herbal Tea (around RM1.50/glass)

Claypot Chicken Rice (RM7.00 for small/RM14.00 for large)
Tadaa! The salted fish is placed on a separate small plate, but I personally enjoy having it in the claypot chicken rice! It's almost like a must, lest it'll just have 1-dimension/level of taste. I find that probably this particular day's rice is slightly too wet/lumpy, unlike the really good claypot chicken rice where the rice is "grainy"/al dante/moist yet have some bite...? I don't know how it should be described. Heh. It could also do with a tablespoon more of dark soya sauce to give every grain of rice a nice "tan"! :D

Mix it, mix it...
Mix all the ingredients together with the rice - chicken, Chinese waxed pork sausages/"lap cheong", salted fish, ginger, spring onions, & rice

Every grain of rice must be covered with dark soya sauce
This one didn't have enough to cover...not sure if it's that particular day or the standard has dropped.

"Choy Sum" with Oyster Sauce
I don't know why & how food operators can serve old/yellowish-looking vegetables to their customers. Sigh. We were all quite disappointed with this, but we still finished it up. They just chopped the veggie into 2 (Cantonese speaking, it's very "chou"/rough) & served it without erm, arranging it nicely? Hahaha...I know this is just a coffeeshop & they may not care about presentation, but hey, it does help to at least chop it into 3 since the veggie is quite long/big.

Double-Boiled Herbal Soup with "Black Chicken" (RM6.00/pot)
I didn't have this, but JS didn't complain/give any feedbacks about the soup, so I gather that it's acceptable ;)

You'll have to try it for yourself to judge if this claypot chicken rice is according to your preference :) I won't mind going there again to give it a 2nd chance as it's actually not that bad.

KL Fish Head Noodles, Kuantan

>> Friday, September 21, 2012

Most of the time, when I'm back in Kuantan, I'll end up in the "same old food places". It's like revisits after revisits. Haha. This time around, I got to "try" something different/new i.e. fish head noodles in Air Putih. When I saw the shop, I was like "Huh?? KL Fish Head Noodles???"

I can't believe that a person like me from PJ/KL is in Kuantan for some fish head noodles, supposedly also from KL =.=" Anyway, AP & HW said that this place offers one of the better, if not the best fish head noodles in Kuantan. The place is relatively new & is more packed during breakfast. It's spacious, clean, & the menu is quite clear & straight forward too.

Fish (Fried) Head Noodles with Milk (RM7.00/bowl)
The noodles are just nice, but I find the milky soup lacking in "umph". Perhaps it lacks alcohol/Chinese cooking wine. It's somehow not as fragrant as the one from Kepong - my current favourite. I find the fish not as juicy as well. I personally feel that it's not "freshly fried", but maybe it's just today/that particular hour. I very much prefer deep-fried fish that is so crispy that even when you soak it in the soup, it will still be crispy 'til you can crunch through all the bones. Yums :) But on the overall, this fish head noodles is not too bad.

Herbal Tea (RM1.20/glass)
Not too sweet & it's not the cheapo "pak chi chou"! It's "loh hon kor" :D

If you're around the area or can't decide what to eat in Kuantan for lunch, this is not too bad an option. If given a choice, I think I will still prefer having the "fried porridge" to this particular fish head noodles. Heehee. It's my personal preference. You'll have to taste it to find out for yourself if this fish head noodles suit your tastebuds!

Home-Cooked: Salmon Fish Head Bee Hoon

>> Saturday, September 15, 2012

I didn't follow any recipe...it's an "experiment" (as usual) based on the much that I have eaten...hahaha. How I cook & what I put in relates a lot to the experiences that I've had prior to my "experiment". This "experiment" of salmon fish head noodles came about just because I have a piece of salmon fish head in the fridge courtesy of my uncle Abby in Kuantan :D It's SO YUMMY!!

Ingredients (portion for 1 person)
Fish head - cleaned & seasoned with salt/pepper, evaporated milk, bee hoon (soaked in warm water first), salted vegetable, sour plums, beancurd, tomatoes, ginger, Chinese cooking wine/alcohol alike, sesame seed oil, cooking oil...the ONE thing I didnt' have is Chinese parsley. It makes a LOT of difference, but oh well...

1. Make sure you coat your fish with some corn flour (or any flour for frying)
It helps give a nice golden brown colour to the fish as well as helps prevent oil to spark everywhere due to presence of water!

2. Heat up oil in wok at high heat/flame to fry fish (enough oil to cover at least half the fish)
Once the oil is hot enough, place the fish on the skin-side first (lower to medium-high heat/flame) & allow to fry 'til you can see it browning before turning it around. This will prevent the skin to be stuck to the wok.

3. Flip the fish
Once the fish's skin is brown, flip the fish & allow the other side to fry/cook. You can keep "splashing" oil onto the top-side of the fish to keep the skin cooking continuously. You can remove the fish from wok once both sides are golden brown. Hello, Mr Salmon!

Uber crispy & awesome-tasting salmon fish head! :D
Mr Salmon says "hi"...

See...golden brown...so nice, right? Teehee...

* Scoop hot oil from the wok into a container/oil-storing mug, leaving only 1 tablespoon of oil in the wok at low heat/flame.

4. Stir-fry ginger/vegetables/sour plum
Start with the frying the ginger 'til aromatic. Then add the salted veggie, followed by tomatoes, & lastly the sour plum. Turn up the heat/flame at least to medium-high while you stir-fry.

5. Add water (enough for 1 bowl of soup for the noodles)
Bring to water to boil at medium-high or high heat/flame. Add the beancurds, a dash of sesame seed oil, some salt & pepper to taste.

6. Add evaporated milk & Chinese cooking wine/alcohol
Add roughly 3 soup-spoonful of evaporated milk to the soup. You can add more/less according to preference on how milky you want your soup to be. I added a wee bit too much milk...hahaha...it's too milky already! :S Let it boil for a while (around 2-3 minutes), then add 1-2 soup spoonful of alcohol, depending on how "umph" you like your soup to be.

7. Remove from heat & serve! :D
Enjoy the lovely home-cooked salmon fish head noodles. Can't get it anywhere else :P

Thick, juicy salmon

Mr. Salmon's cheek...hohoho...noms!

The end of Mr. Salmon! *grins with pride*
