Square Dotz Cafe, SS2 PJ

>> Wednesday, November 28, 2012

Overall comment: Simple & cosy cafe with a substantial variety of food, but the prices are quite steep for the portion & taste of dish served. Service was very slow when I was there 'cause they forgot my order...sigh. I hope it's a one-off thing only.
Halal: Pork-free only. No halal certification obtained since this cafe serves beer.

One of the latest eateries in SS2 PJ is Square Dotz Cafe on SS2/66. I happen to stumble upon this place early this month when I went for a haircut in SS2. Since I had to grab dinner before I head over to church, I decided to just try out this place, which is across the road from my hair salon.

The cafe is homey & cosy as it was a house converted into a cafe. The menu is also very simple, with just 1 A4 sheet as the menu. They offer breakfast from 8:00a.m. - 10:30a.m. with prices starting from RM5.50/serving for cereals to RM9.80/serving for Chicken Cheese Quesadilla. Their mains are available from 11:00a.m. onwards with prices starting from RM9.80/serving for pies to RM19.90/serving for baked fish. Apart from the "heavy food", the cafe offers desserts & snacks as well to complete your meal :)

Square Dotz's Menu
Substantial items on the menu, but hey, there are typos!

Setting & Ambiance of the Cafe
Very simple & some parts still look very much like you're in a house. There's a slight feeling that I'm actually dining in someone's house where I don't even know the owner! Kinda weird...haha...thanks to the youths who were chilling out at the couch doing their homework...etc. I reckon they're the owner's children/family members.

Waiting for the food to arrive...
This is what free-time/boredom can do to yours truly...

I waited....and waited....

They actually forgot my order although I was the only one in the cafe =.=" (there were 3-4 more orders by people seated outside, but their food were served & I was still waiting...). I couldn't believe it but I didn't turn into a "Godzilla" & over-turned the table in fury...hahaha...I just tried to keep my cool & stayed calm...

Oven-Baked Chicken (RM15.80/serving)
Oven-baked chicken with fresh mushrooms, mashed potatoes, beans & carrots

The 1st impression that I have is that "it doesn't look very appetizing". Colour combination isn't very attractive & "colours/presentation" is something that I'm quite focused when it comes to presentation of food. The look-and-feel of a dish does affect a person's appetite, I'm very sure!

Taste-wise, it was quite homey. I wish there was more "punch" to the gravy on the chicken. It's a very basic onion-chicken-sauce over a mildly roasted chicken thigh. There's a great deal of room for improvement for the oven-baked chicken as I feel that the chicken skin could be slightly more crispy & "roasted". Oh yes, the chicken is 100% frozen-chicken as the meat wasn't springy & "fresh from the market".

The mushrooms were quite disappointing as well. There were just 2 tiny mushrooms! :( Not nicely sauteed some more...sobs. The mash was alright - it's not really smooth like a pre-packed nor was it chunky like a 100% home-made mashed potatoes. I could still accept it although it's not "wow" nor "I-want-more". Beans & carrots were fine - can't really go wrong. It's properly cooked.

I'm such a critique. Bummer. But I seriously feel that this place could improve a great deal on their food's taste, presentation & service for the price they're charging per dish. To survive in the very competitive area like SS2, they better start improving fast to get a steady flow of customers, else they'll have to consider moving out of SS2...

Brunch at Hotel Seri Petaling

>> Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Mum had RM80.00 worth of cash vouchers for a meal at Hotel Sri Petaling. It's our first time there & I seriously didn't have high expectations on a 3-star hotel's restaurant. It's not some famous hotel down town, rather it's a humble hotel tucked amidst some residential/commercial square.

The hotel is quite small, with just 1 coffee house/restaurant to serve its customers. When we arrived there, the place was actually empty. It's probably expected cos it was around 11am & breakfast period would have been over. Moreover, there are loads of coffeeshops & restaurants around the hotel area that serves pretty good variety of local food as well. Hmm...challenging for this hotel's restaurant to really stand out among the good local restaurants.

Their menu was rather simple, clean, & straight-forward. All the prices were stated clearly as well, but it just lacks information on how many pieces are served per serving. Perhaps this is something for Hotel Sri Petaling to consider; equipping their menu with adequate information for their customers.

Fruit Juice (and the cheeky sister - not for sale!)
The fruit juices are quite standard. At least it's not watered down :)

While waiting for our food...
Yes, we were quite bored, so the camera was our sole entertainment...not too bad for a compact camera :)

Spaghetti Marinara
It's certainly not the best, but at least it's edible. The seafood were alright...not very fresh, yet not bad as well.

Nasi Lemak
Lacking in the coconut milk flavour in the rice, but overall, it's not too bad for a hotel's coffee house.

Samosa
You'll have to eat it while it's hot/warm, else the skin will be rubbery!

Deep-Fried Chicken Wings
These were the best :) Nicely marinated (though there's still room for improvement) & crispy too! Yums :)

Dessert: Ice cream
Since we had RM80.00 to spend, we concluded our meal with some ice-cream. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience, albeit the slower service & the slight hiccups here & there.

Yup, all the above inclusive of taxes amounted to RM78+. We still had RM2 to spare from our vouchers, but oh well, it's tips for the restaurant! :D

Review: MIX IT at Old Town White Coffee

Old Town White Coffee Kopitiam has a new range of ice-blended, called the Mix It. For RM7.90, you'll get to enjoy a cup of refreshing & flavourful ice-blended coffee along with your meal at this cosy, yet casual & well-known kopitiam chain.

There are basically 2 main drink bases, where you can opt to mix it with 3 different ingredients:
Old Town White Coffee Cookie Base + Roasted Peanuts/Chocolate Chips/Cookies Crumbs
Old Town White Coffee Mint Base + Roasted Peanuts/Chocolate Chips/Cookies Crumbs

As I'm a fan of mint & cookies, I opted for the Old Town White Coffee Mint Base + Cookies Crumbs! It was quite yummy :) The coffee taste was nicely blended with the cookies, so the drink was quite delicious; it was refreshing as well since there's mint! The ice was blended quite fine, so it kinda melts slightly faster than the ones from Starbucks/specialized coffee-outlets.

While we were at the 1 Utama branch for the review of Old Town White Coffee Kopitiam's new Mix It drink, we also got to try out some of their Signature dishes, only available at their Signature branches! Their menu is slightly different compared to the usual Old Town Kopitiams as they have additional items on the menu, some are quite special/different. I guess some of the dishes may also be more expensive compared to the usual Old Town Kopitiams. As far as I know, there are at least 5 Signature branches around Klang Valley itself:
@1 Utama New Wing
@ Taipan, Subang
@ Sungai Wang Plaza
@ Pavillion Shopping Mall
@ Solaris Dutamas

Here are some of the items that we tried that evening:

Before the food goes into anyone's mouth...
It's such a typical scene at food review events...heehee... I'm still quite fascinated by such sight although I'm a food blogger myself - well, I don't own a DSLR! :D

Garlic Butter Toast (RM4.60/serving)
It looks good, but I personally feel that it's a tad costly for garlic butter toast. Nevertheless, I think it tasted good since no one made any complaints about it.

Fried Dumpling (RM5.90/serving)
For those who are keen on having snacks, this is a nice, crunchy snack.

Curry Puff (RM4.90/2 pieces)
Although quite costly, these curry puffs were said to be really good. I didn't try it though...I wasn't very hungry & just wanted to make sure I could finish my nasi lemak :P

Cocktail Sausages (RM5.90/basket)
Two of our blogger friends are sausage-addicts! Hahaha...they claim that Old Town Kopitiam serves quite nicely done sausages for munchies.

Main Meal: Supreme Rendang Chicken Nasi Lemak (RM13.50/serving)
This version of nasi lemak comes with sambal sotong + ayam rendang + all the classic condiments. It's quite nice, I've to say. At least the nasi lemak does have the coconut milk taste!

Main Meal: Fried Kuey Teow in Egg Gravy/"Wat Tan Hor" (RM10.90/serving)
This was one of the best dishes that arrived at our table. It's very surprising! I wouldn't put much expectation on a simple & humble "wat tan hor" by Old Town Kopitiam as I always believe that those by Chiense "dai chow" would be SO much nicer. Old Town Kopitiam surprised us all indeed...

Supreme Javanese Mee (RM9.50/serving)
Nothing much to shout about. I still prefer the ones I get from coffeeshops outside :P Somehow this one lacks "umphh..."!

Signature Fried Rice (RM11.90/serving)
Doesn't look too bad & you can only get this at the Signature branches. I'm not sure how it tasted, but the blogger finished the whole serving ;)

Old Town Kopitiam may not be the best place for desserts, but they sure have something for everyone at all times!

Strawberry Snow Ice (RM6.90/serving)
Snow ice is something you'll find more commonly at Taiwanese dessert shops. No doubt those are far better than these, but we're quite forgiving as long as Old Town continues to serve good coffee & decent food.

Mango Snow Ice (RM6.90/serving)

Peanut Snow Ice (RM6.90/serving)
The texture of the ice is kinda interesting. It looks like shaved coconut, doesn't really melt in your mouth smoothly, but is still snow ice! Very strange...

 Our bill...*gulp*

Souvenir/Gift from Old Town White Coffee
Thank you! :)

If you're a fan of ice-blended coffee/mocha (I can't say that it's a 100% ice-blended coffee since there are chocolates), do try the Mix It to find out for yourself how this drink tastes. It's quite a refreshing drink, especially on a hot day :)

What's your favourite Mix It?
